Meet John, the heart and soul behind Get Into Recovery.

His journey through recovery, which began in 2002, is not just his story – it’s a reflection of the possibilities that await you. When John started his path to recovery, he faced the same pain, despair, and sense of hopelessness that many of our visitors experience today. His story isn’t just about overcoming substance dependence; it’s about the everyday victories that you too can achieve.

From the publication of his “Sponsor’s 12 Step Manual” in 2012, which has helped thousands globally, to his leadership roles that have shaped recovery practices both locally and internationally, John’s achievements showcase the potential for significant impact that lies in all of us. His recent 20-year sobriety milestone is a testament to the enduring change that is possible when courage meets opportunity.

My Story

Since 2004, John has spearheaded the development of his recovery models within the 12 Step framework, notably launching the Integrated Step Course in the UK in 2014. This program received outstanding feedback and contributed significantly to a Midlands service earning a distinguished CQC report.

Beyond program innovation, John has served as the UK liaison for the USA Willingway Foundation and as a board member of FAVOR UK. His global outreach included training individuals in Africa on recovery models in 2016, showcasing his commitment to international recovery efforts.

John’s entrepreneurial flair is evident in his 2019 acquisition of Somerton Lodge, a recovery-focused hotel on the Isle of Wight. This venture complements his ongoing development of Twelve Step Facilitation models and exemplifies his effective leadership.

With a background in service development and management and over 20 years of lived recovery experience, John’s previous roles include Project Manager for the IOW Youth Trust and CQC Registered Manager at Newport Residential Care, a care home for persons with chronic mental health. His educational background, with certifications in Recovery Coaching, Cognitive Behavioural Therapy, Psychology and Leadership for Health and Social Care, solidifies his theoretical and practical expertise.

Recognising the growing understanding around trauma and addiction John has started to write another book, the book is titled ‘Healing from Within: Managing Adverse Emotional Stress and Trauma Through a 12 Step Lens’ and will be published soon. In October 2024 John was registered as an Advanced Practitioner by ‘Addiction Professionals’ and will continue to develop his knowledge as part of this registration.

Finally John is working with the services in Middlesbrough again, but this time working in Hampshire, to develop and embed Recovery Connections Ambassador Programme, an exciting development that will grow into some wonderful community lead recovery assets.
